NEXT Payments: getting started
v0.5Updated Sep 28, 2026
Set up your NEXT Payments account, store gateway, payment methods, and dispute alerts before launch.
Portal split
The NEXT Payments account portal lives in the main NEXT platform portal, not inside a specific store. That distinction matters because the account portal is where you apply, manage users, and configure the payments account itself.
Main NEXT portal
Use the Payments menu to view all payments accounts your user belongs to, apply for new accounts, and manage account-level settings.
Store level
Use Settings > Payments inside a store to activate the gateway, assign it to an active gateway group, and manage supported payment methods for that store.
How to think about it
Apply and manage the payments account at the portal level. Connect and operate the gateway at the store level.
Apply flow
From the Payments menu in the NEXT portal, choose Create New to begin onboarding.
Account details
Complete the guided form with the business, store, and contact details requested for your account.
Portal redirect
After the form is submitted, NEXT redirects you into the KYC onboarding flow.
Automated onboarding
The portal shows each required step. If review requests more information, submit it from the same onboarding flow.
KYC onboarding
Once the account form is complete, the application moves into KYC review. The portal shows the identity, business, address, ownership, and bank information required for that account.
What you see
The KYC flow collects the required verification and banking information before the account can be approved.
Before you submit
Use current records and make sure the legal entity, ownership, address, and bank details agree.
Approval & activation
Once the account is approved, NEXT automatically creates the NEXT Payments gateway in the connected store.
Account approved
The account moves from onboarding to active status after review is completed.
Gateway created in the store
The gateway appears in Settings > Payments inside the store and is ready to be attached to an active gateway group.
Gateway group required
The gateway does not receive live charges until it is added to an active gateway group.
Gateway activation
After approval, finish the store-side setup in Settings > Payments.
Open the store payment settings
Go to the store where you want to process payments and open Settings > Payments.
Add the gateway to a live group
Make sure the NEXT Payments gateway is part of an active gateway group. This is what routes live charges to the processor.
Confirm payment methods
Enable each approved alternative payment method from the gateway's Alternative Payment Methods card.
Payment methods
NEXT Payments accepts Visa, Mastercard, American Express, Discover, and JCB. The alternative methods currently documented are:
| Method | Markets |
|---|---|
| Apple Pay | All supported markets |
| Google Pay | All supported markets |
| Affirm | United States and Canada |
| Klarna | North America, Europe, and Oceania |
| TWINT | Switzerland |
| Swish | Sweden |
| iDEAL | Netherlands |
| Bancontact | Belgium |
Approval still applies
Apply for a method in your NEXT Payments account first. After approval, enable it on the store gateway. TWINT and Swish are exclusive to NEXT Payments.
Dispute alerts
NEXT Alerts handles pre-chargeback alerts for NEXT Payments transactions. Your NEXT contact sets it up with the information in the NEXT Alerts guide. Transactions on another gateway need a separate dispute-alert provider.
Balances & risk
Open a payments account to use its dedicated navigation. The account switcher moves between accounts, and Balances brings balances and payouts into one view.
Balance statements
Export a Balance Summary PDF for any date range when finance needs a record of account activity, fees, and payouts.
NEXT Risk Protect
Review orders blocked by fraud screening and the signals behind each block. Adjust the account's Risk Tolerance only after checking the impact on legitimate orders.
Accounts & users
The Payments menu shows the accounts available to your user. Use the account switcher after opening an account. Review user access before sharing payment, dispute, payout, or settings responsibilities.
Store settings
In the account detail view, the main things to watch are:
- Business name and account status.
- Payout bank account setup.
- Stores attached to the payments account.
- User access and roles.
- Approved payment methods for each store.
- Risk Tolerance and blocked orders.
What the Settings page is for
Use the Settings page to add stores, confirm the bank account, control user access, and manage which payment methods are enabled for the account. The account detail view also shows business name, timezone, default currency, created date, and billing account status.
Launch checklist
- Apply for the payments account from the main NEXT portal, not from the store.
- Complete the KYC flow with the required identity, address, entity, and bank information.
- Wait for approval and confirm the gateway appears in the store.
- Add the gateway to an active gateway group before sending traffic.
- Confirm the store is attached to the right payments account.
- Enable each approved payment method from the gateway's Alternative Payment Methods card.
- Provide the information in the NEXT Alerts setup guide and confirm activation with NEXT.
- Run a final checkout test for each enabled payment method before announcing it to customers.
- Verify user access roles before sharing the account with support or finance.
Finding an ARN
An Acquirer Reference Number (ARN) can help an issuing bank trace a settled card transaction or refund. Look for it on the transaction detail page in the Payments portal.
Open the Payments portal
Go to Payments > Accounts in the main NEXT portal and open the account that processed the transaction.
Find the transaction
Open Payments for the account and click the transaction you need the ARN for.
Copy the ARN field
Copy the ARN shown on the transaction. Do not substitute the PSP Reference or Authorization Code.
If the field is empty
The ARN may not be available until the transaction or refund has settled. If it remains empty, send the transaction reference to NEXT support for review.
ARN
The acquiring reference used to trace a settled card transaction.
PSP Reference
Internal payment processor identifier. Useful for NEXT support, but not what the customer's bank is asking for.
Authorization Code
Short code issued at authorization. It is different from the ARN.
